Antique Tonita Roybal Pueblo de San Ildefonso Black on Black Pottery

This is an antique piece of Native American pottery by one of the finest potters of the twentieth century named Tonita Roybal. She lived from 1892–1945 in the Pueblo de San Ildefonso in New Mexico, and began making pottery in 1909, with her husband Juan painting her pieces beginning in 1917. The black on black style of pottery became popular in the 1920s, so this piece is probably from the 1920s-30s.

This piece is decorated with a kind of stair step design repeated all around.

This piece has quite a lot of surface scuffing, but no chips or cracks. The interior is unglazed and a white color. It is signed on the bottom, "Tonita & Juan".
